Mel Tillis – “I Got the Hoss” -- 1977

 

 

When Mel Tillis released his top ten hit, “I Got the Hoss” from the album, ‘Love’s Troubled Waters,” Dorothy Kathleen Benham from Minnesota won the Miss America Pageant.  “I Got the Hoss” reached number three on the Billboard Country Chart.  The song was written by Gerald House.

George Jones & Tammy Wynette – “Two Story House” -- 1980

 

 

“Two Story House” is written by David Lindsay and Tammy Wynette.  The song was released in February 1980 from the album, ‘Together Again.’  “Two Story House” was part of historic week on the Billboard Country Singles Chart in the week it reached number five, all of the top five positions were held by female singers.  The top five from that weeks number one position was held by Crystal Gale, followed by Dottie West, Debby Boone, Emmylou Harris and at number five Tammy Wynette with George Jones.  “Two Story House” peaked at number two.

We always wanted a big two story house, back when we lived in that little two room shack.

 


 

Jeannie C. Riley – “Harper Valley P.T.A.” -- 1968

 

 

“Harper Valley T.P.A.” is written by Tom T. Hall and recorded by Jeannie C. Riley.  That song sold over six million copies as a single.  Riley was the first woman to top both Billboard Hot 100 and Country Singles charts with the same song.  Top news stories at that time -- the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Senator Robert F. Kennedy

Keith Whitley – “Don’t Close Your Eyes” -- 1988

 

 

“Don’t Close Your Eyes” is written by Bob McDill and recorded by Keith Whitley.  It was released in March of 1988 from the album of the same name.  It peaked at number one on Billboards Country Chart.  Later in the year Republicans sweep 40 states in the election, George H.W. Bush beats Michael Dukakis.

I know you loved him a long time ago, even now in my arms you still want him. 

 


 

 

Tanya Tucker – “Would You Lay with me in a Field of Stone” -- 1973

 

 

“Would You Lay with me in a Field of Stone” is written by David Allen Coe and recorded by Tanya Tucker.  It was released in December 1973 from the album of the same name.  It topped the country chart on March 30, 1974.  During this songs climb to the top of the chart, Patricia Hearst 19 year old daughter of publisher Randolph Hearst was kidnapped by Symbionese Liberation army February 5, 1974.
