This week on the 98 Country Classic Bonus, we're focusing on the year 1984.

Here’s what was making news in 1984:

  • The first Apple Macintosh computer goes on sale,
  • Vanessa Williams becomes the First Miss America to resign when she surrenders her crown after nude photos of her appear in Penthouse Magazine,
  • Ronald Reagan defeats Walter Mondale for President, Mondale wins only his home state of Minnesota (by a mere 3,761 votes) and the District of Columbia,
  • And in 1984, many of us were listening to George Strait, Ed Bruce, Johnny Lee, The Kendalls and The Judds.

George Strait – “Let’s Fall to Pieces Together”

A song written by Dickey Lee, Johnny Russell and Tommy Rocco, the song was released in May 1984 from the album Right or Wrong.  It was George Strait's fifth number one country hit.  The song is about a man who lost the love of his life.

Pardon me, you left your tears on the juke box.

Ed Bruce – “You Turn Me on (Like A Radio)”

This song was written by Bob McDill and Jim Weatherly.  The song was released in October 1984, the first single from Ed Bruce’s album, "Homecoming." The song reached number three on Billboard's "Hot Country Singles Chart."

Johnny Lee with Lane Brody – “The Yellow Rose”

“The Yellow Rose” co-written and recorded by singer Johnny Lee and Lane Brody, set to the tune of the folk song, “The Yellow Rose of Texas.”  It was recorded as the theme song to the NBC-TV series "The Yellow Rose" starring Cybill Shepherd.

There’s a yellow rose in Texas I’m going home to see though other men have held her heart.

The Kendalls – “Thank God for the Radio”

"Thank God for the Radio" is a 1984 song that became father-daughter duo The Kendalls' last number one country hit. The song spent twelve weeks on the country chart.  The song was covered ten years later by Alan Jackson in his 1994 album, "Who Am I."

Thank God for the radio when I’m on the road.

The Judds – “Why Not Me”

“Why Not Me” is the first full-length album by the country duo The Judds.  It scored several country hits including the title track from the album, “Why Not Me.”  The song went on to win the Grammy Award for "Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group."

You been lookin’ for love all around the world,

baby don’t you know this country girl still free,

why not me?
