In the days after the September 11 attacks, Alan Jackson put his emotions into song with ‘Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning),’ an eventual country number one hit that also broke into the top 30 on the pop charts.

Ten years later, the track is regarded as one of the defining moments of Jackson’s career — and he has been asked to perform it at the upcoming Concert for Hope, held to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

Scheduled to be held on the anniversary of the attacks, the Concert for Hope is set to take place at the Washington National Cathedral with a lineup that includes Patti LaBelle and opera singer Denyce Graves. Jackson will presumably accept his invitation, although he says the song’s enduring legacy came as a surprise to him.

“I thought we’d just perform it for a while and then it would go away,” he told The Boot. “I didn’t feel like people would want to keep thinking about that. But even today, I still see people waiting on that song, and they’ll still be on their feet several minutes after finishing the song. It’s about what’s important … so it’s gone beyond the tragedy a little bit.”
