The Year of Three Popes:  Pope Paul VI dies in August, new Pope John Paul I dies unexpectedly after 34 days in September,  he is succeeded by Cardinal Karol Wojyla, a Polish Cardinal who becomes John Paul II in October.

Humphrey Dies: Hubert Humphrey Senator from Minnesota and former Vice President to Lyndon Johnson died January 13^th and buried in Lackwood Cemetery in Minneapolis.

Top Ten Country Hits: Emmy Lou Harris, The Kendalls, Crystal Gayle, Ronnie Milsap, Waylon and Willie were at the top of the charts in 1978.

Emmy Lou Harris – “Two More Bottles of Wine”

Delbert McClinton wrote the song, a number one hit for Emmy Lou Harris from the album “Quarter Moon in a Ten Cent Town.”  The song has great lyrics:

We came out west together with a common desire,
the fever we had might of set the west coast on fire.

The Kendalls – “Sweet Desire”

One of the rare father-daughter duos in country music history, The Kendalls were also the most successful racking up a series of hits during the late 70s and early 80s. Jeannie sang lead on most of the group’s material while father Royce did harmony and shunned the spotlight.  “Sweet Desire” as 1978 single was their fourth country hit and their second number one on the country chart.

Crystal Gayle – “Ready for the Times to Get Better”

“Ready for the Times to Get Better” was written by Allen Reynolds and recorded by Crystal Gayle.  It was released in January 1978 as the fourth single from the album “Crystal.”  It was Gayle’s fourth number one hit on Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart.  It stayed on the Country chart for ten weeks.

Ronnie Milsap – “Back on My Mind Again”

“Back on my Mind Again” by Ronnie Milsap was written by Charles Quillen and Conrad Pierce.  The song hit number two on the country chart and stayed at number two for three weeks. 

It took some time to clear my mind and give myself a change of atmosphere.

Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson – “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys”

The song “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboy’s” is a country song written by Ed Bruce and his wife Patsy.  Ed Bruce recorded the song.  In late 1975 and early 1976, Bruce’s rendition went to number fifteen on the hot country singles chart.  The song warns mothers not to let their children become cowboys because of the tough and busy life of cowboy culture. Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson covered the song on their 1978 duet album “Waylon and Willie” their rendition went to number one in March of 1978 and stayed at number one for four weeks.
