New Darius Rucker Song Inspired by St. Jude Patient [Watch]

A courageous patient at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital inspired a new song and video from Darius Rucker.

12-year-old Brennan Simkins was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in January of 2009, at the age of six. After his fourth bone marrow transplant, Brennan's condition took a turn for the worse. That's when music promoter Joe Stevenson, a family friend, encouraged Brennan's father, Turner Simkins, to write a song.

“We had gotten ourselves into the mindset of ‘Here we go again,’ ” Turner Simkins tells the Augusta Chronicle. “He knew it would be something to take my mind off things.”

The result was a song titled 'Possibilities.' Rucker heard the tune when Simkins presented it to him at a guitar pull, and he recorded it at a session in Memphis with the help of patients at the hospital. He released it on Dec. 16 as part of a holiday promotion for St. Jude.

“Music is really good at giving people hope to think things are going to get better. That’s what this song is all about,” Rucker says. “I think a lot of parents, when their kids get sick, hope is so hard to find. When I heard it, I was excited to do it.”

Turner Simkins says his song serves as a reminder that there is always hope, even when things seem darkest. “It’s about gratitude and the gifts we always have, regardless of our circumstances,” he states. “It’s a song about faith, friends, family and possibilities.”

Brennan Simkins has been in remission since February of 2011.
