Somewhere along the way, someone taught us that Christopher Columbus discovered America. Maybe he did sail the ocean blue in 1492, but it took me awhile to figure out the truth.

I think I'll take a drive to Cold Spring today. Put my "Cindy" flag in the dirt, come back to work and go on the air and claim that I've discovered Cold Spring. What? There are already people who live there?  Well, I'll show them!

Not only did Columbus not discover America, he didn't discover the West Indies either, since people already lived there. And I'm guessing that Leif Erikson would have a thing or two to say about the whole fairy tale of discovery. He got here about 500 years before Chris started telling his tall tales.

That's why I think it's long overdue that we recognize Indigenous Peoples Day. They're doing just that in Minneapolis and many other cities across the country. Sure, some people think it's crazy. But that's just because it's been driven into our brains over and over again that Columbus was responsible for finding this land. And for some, change--and realizing the truth--is hard.
