Kaycee is usually a good dog but every once in a while her need for adventure kicks in and off she goes.  This one might have been a little painful for her.

I got home Friday night and I brought Kaycee outside.  I saw she had what looked like a piece of hay in her hair by her neck, which is not unusual, so I went to pull it but it wouldn't come out.

My brother came over to see what was up and he kept finding all of these toothpick looking things in her hair.  Everywhere -- her back, legs, tail, neck and stomach.  It was insane.  Neither one of us knew what they were for sure but I looked up porcupine quills and sure enough they looked exactly like what we had pulled out.

In total we pulled 52 quills out of her and we found out that a neighbor had buried a dead one.  So I'm guessing she smelled it, dug it up and rolled in it.  GROSS!  On the flip side, I'm pretty proud of her -- I would have been bawling like a baby if we had pulled all of those out of me.

Has your dog dealt with a porcupine before?  Any tips on what to look for to make sure they don't end up with an infection?
