New Laws That Take Effect Today

Jen Jacobs

Today begins the second half of 2014, and that means that there are several new laws that go into effect today.

A few laws that take effect today include new spending for higher education for facilities in the Minnesota State Colleges and University Systems, a law that allows the University of Minnesota to receive money to go toward honey bee research and the effects that agriculture has on honey bee populations and there’s a new law on the books called Steve’s Law. Steve’s Law allows a bystander to call 911 in the case of a drug overdose without being charged with possession, use or sharing of drugs. Here are a few others:

E-Cigs

Tighter regulations begin for e-cigarettes today. Starting today, e-cigs can’t be used in daycare centers, hospitals, clinics, schools, or government buildings, including state universities. Bars, restaurants and private businesses have discretion to regulate them as they see fit. Also, e-cigs cannot be sold at kiosks and the liquid must come in child resistant packaging no later than January 1, 2015.

Tanning Beds

No one under the age of 18 is allowed to use a tanning bed that contains ultra violet light bulbs. Minors can, however still use tanning equipment that does not contain UV rays; including spray tans.

Kill Switches

Minnesota is the first state in the country to pass a kill switch law and what that does is render your phone useless in case it gets stolen. Mobile phone dealers must now keep detailed records of phone purchases and they must receive a signed statement from a seller that certifies that the phone is not stolen It also requires phone dealers to install cameras that record faces of their sales people.
