The Baltimore Ravens jumped out to a huge early lead then weathered a comeback attempt to defeat the San Francisco 49ers 34-31 at the Superdome in New Orleans Sunday night. Baltimore wide receiver Jacoby Jones set an NFL record with a 108-yard kickoff return and also had a 52-yard touchdown catch in the game.

The Ravens struck first less than five minutes into the game on a Joe Flacco pass to Anquan Boldin from 13 yards out to make the score 7-0. San Francisco got a field goal from maligned kicker David Akers late in the first to make the score 7-3 after one.

Flacco capped a 75 yard drive halfway through the second quarter with a touchdown pass to tight end Dennis Pitta to make the score 14-3. The Ravens scored again on Flacco’s third touchdown pass of the game, a 52-yard bomb to Jacoby Jones making the score 21-3.

Akers hit another field goal as time expired in the second half to send the 49ers to the locker room at the half down 21-6.

Baltimore extended their lead when Jones ran the half’s opening kickoff 108 yards from end zone to end zone for a touchdown to make the score 28-6.

After the touchdown, half of the lights in the Superdome went dark and caused a 38 minute delay. When play resumed, the 49ers seemed to have the momentum.

Michael Crabtree’s 31 yard touchdown reception from Colin Kaepernick capped an impressive 80-yard San Francisco drive that made the score 28-13 in favor of the Ravens.

After a long punt return by Ted Ginn, Jr., Frank Gore found the end zone for the 49ers to make it a 28-20 game. Akers would add his third field goal later in the third quarter to make it 28-23 Ravens after three quarters.

Ravens kicker Justin Tucker connected on a 19 yard field goal to cap a time-consuming drive and extend Baltimore’s lead to 31-23 with 12:57 left in regulation.

However, San Francisco would not be deterred. Kaepernick led the 49ers on a 5 play, 76 yard drive that culminated in a 15 yard TD scamper by the Niners quarterback. Kaepernick could not connect with wide receiver Randy Moss on the two point conversion, so San Francisco remained down by a pair of points.

Tucker added another field goal with just over four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, setting the stage for a dramatic final drive for the 49ers.

Kaepernick drove San Francisco all the way down to the Baltimore red zone, but his desperation pass on 4th and goal from the five fell incomplete and Baltimore was able to run out the clock and seal their second title with a 34-31 win.

Ravens QB Flacco finished the game with 287 yards and three touchdowns in the game. Anquan Boldin was his favorite target with six catches for 104 yards and a touchdown.

49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick ended the game with 302 yards passing and 62 yards rushing on seven carries. He threw one interception, ran for a TD and threw a TD pass in the game. Tight end Vernon Davis and receiver Michael Crabtree each had over 100 yards receiving for the Niners.
