I think anyone with kids has a bunch of broken crayons lying around. Elena and I used our crayons to decorate Easter eggs. The important part of the technique here is to use just boiled eggs so the hot shell will melt the crayon. Well…..in theory – but we found that just drawing on the shell didn’t really melt the crayon. We had much better results with crayon shavings.
Melted Crayon Eggs
Materials
–just boiled eggs
–crayons
–tongs
–empty egg carton or plastic bottle caps
Instructions
Use your tongs to rest your hot eggs in an empty egg carton or on plastic bottle caps. You can just lay them on a towel but it’s hard to decorate the bottom of the egg without ruining the top when you turn it over. But lying in a basket you only see one side anyway and that’s the easy way to go if your kids are young (it’s what we did).
Now you can try drawing on the egg with your crayon and swirling the colors together – and maybe your crayons are meltier than ours – but we didn’t have much luck.
What really worked for us was to just throw a bunch of crayon shavings on the hot egg and watch it melt into colorful speckles. I pre-grated the crayons on a cheese grater with very small holes.
Now, try not to touch them until they’re dry – they take about half an hour.
