Sneak Peek – SCSU Theater Presents ‘The King Stag’ [VIDEO + PHOTOS]

Over the last few weeks we’ve bounced around to the area high schools to capture their fall productions on stage. This time we’ve taken the cameras to SCSU to give you a sneak peek of their latest production The King Stag.

In the 1700s, the Italian writer Carlo Gozzi wrote The King Stag – or at least what would become The King Stag. In those days, Gozzi would write down an idea then hand it off to his commedia dell'arte troupe and they would improvise the entire show. When SCSU theater director Carol Cooley decided to run this show on campus, she had to fill in the script and bring it into a bit of modern day times while keeping the tradition of the play.

Cooley has done an exceptional job breathing new life into this old comedy. The production includes news reports including events happening today, modern technology and modern/futuristic costumes. She and the students have kept the old world feel to the play including the use of masks, puppets and the art of the fairy tale.

King Deramo is searching for his future bride. The entire countryside prepares their daughters to present to the king in hopes that she would be acceptable to him. This brings out the best – and worst of the land in a hilarious presentation of possible brides.

The King chooses a bride that his own First Minister has his eye on. First Minister Tartaglia develops a plot to take down the prince and win back the affection of Angela. This plot includes a bit of magic, some deceit and a stag in the right place at the wrong time.

Can true love win? Will the First Minister win over Angela? And will the King win over his bride? You’ll have to head over the SCSU and find out.

The students do an incredible job delivering the perfect comedic timing in this production. As I sat alone in the auditorium watching their dress rehearsal, I found myself being included in the show as well as laughing out loud at the antics unfolding in front of me. If you are looking for a fun filled evening of laughter, I suggest you make the trip to campus and enjoy the 100 minute production of The King Stag.

Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for students and seniors. SCSU staff and students are free with their SCSU staff ID. Tickets are available at the door, in the Atwood Memorial Center or online. Performances are Tuesday, November 29 – Saturday, December 3 at 7:30pm and Sunday, December 4 at 2pm.
