Join me at 11 a.m. on Sunday, April 20th for the Sunday Morning Country Classic Spotlight featuring Conway Twitty.  The Country Classic Show starts at 9 a.m. on air and online

During Conway’s lifetime he had more number one country records than any artist in history.  He held the record for most number one country hits at 40.  He also had success in early rock and roll, R&B and pop music.

From 1971 to 1976, he received a string of Country Music Association Awards for duets with Loretta Lynn.  Oddly, he never became a member of the Grand Ole Opry.

He was born Harold Lloyd Jenkins on September 1, 1933 in Friars Point, Mississippi.  He decided that his real name wasn’t marketable and sought out a better stage name.  One day he was looking at a road map when he spotted Conway, Arkansas and Twitty, Texas, thus the name Conway Twitty became a reality.

Conway has a long list of hit songs that includes Hello Darlin, After the Fire is Gone with Loretta Lynn, Don’t Cry Joni with Joni Lee Twitty, Conway’s daughter as guest vocalist. There is also tunes like Play Guitar Play, I’d Love to Lay You Down, Slow Hand and many more.

His second love was baseball and he was a very talented baseball player.  Conway was offered a professional contract with the Philadelphia Phillie’s when he was  drafted into the Army.

He was married three times.

In June 1993, he became ill while performing in Branson, Missouri and was in pain while he was on his tour bus.  He died in Springfield, Missouri at a hospital from an abdominal aneurysm at age 59.
