Join me at 11 a.m. November 3rd for the Sunday Morning Country Classic Spotlight featuring Elvis Presley.  The Country Classic Show kicks off at 9 a.m.

Elvis was born on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi in a two room house.  His twin brother, Jessie, was stillborn leaving Elvis to grow up as an only child.

The one factor usually over looked is that he came from the country market and in a sense had a more powerful impact on country music than preeminent country stars. He opened the door for other country singers such as Marty Robbins, Sonny James and Johnny Cash to get their music in to a broader market.

In 1954 Elvis began his singing career with Sun Records in Memphis, Tennessee.  By 1956 he was an international sensation.  He starred in 33 successful films and made history with his television appearances.

Among his many awards were three Grammys.  His talent, good looks, sensuality, charisma and good humor endeared him to millions.  Colonel Tom Parker managed the singer for more than two decades.

Elvis married Priscilla Beaulieu on May 1, 1967.  His only child, Lisa Marie, was born on February 1, 1968.  He and Priscilla divorced on October 9, 1973.

Elvis was scheduled to fly out of Memphis on August 16, 1977 to begin another tour.  That afternoon he was discovered unresponsive on his bathroom floor at Graceland.  Attempts to revive him failed and death was officially pronounced at 3:30 p.m. at Baptist Memorial Hospital.  His funeral was held at Graceland on Thursday August 18, 1977.
