Join me at 11 a.m. on Sunday March 2nd for the Sunday Morning Country Classic Spotlight featuring John Conlee, a Country Classic Spotlight Extra.

John Wayne Conlee came by his country roots honestly having grown up on a farm in Kentucky, a short distance from Lexington.  After high school he earned a mortician’s license and served the recently departed for six years.  He had the gift of gab so he became a radio announcer.  That line of work brought him to Nashville in 1971 where he worked at WLAC FM.

By 1976 he had a recording contract with ABC/DOT.  His first release, Back Side of Thirty, went nowhere fast, but in March of 1978 the label released, Rose Colored Glasses, a song Conlee wrote which became a huge hit as well as his signature song.

In January of 1979, Back Side of Thirty was re-released which went on to become a number one hit.  From there the hits continued with Lady Lay Down, Friday Night Blue’s, Miss Emily’s Picture and Busted, which was a pop hit for Ray Charles in 1963.

John is one of the most respected vocalists to emerge during the urban cowboy era.  Conlee lives his domestic life with his wife and has three children.  He is like the songs of which he sings.
