Join me at 11 a.m. on Sunday February 16th for the Sunday Morning Country Classic Spotlight featuring Lee Greenwood.  The Country Classic Show kicks off at 9 a.m.

Lee Greenwood was born Melvin Lee Greenwood on October 27, 1942 in Los Angeles, California.  He has been active in the country music business since 1962.  The road to Nashville would one day lead him to number one hits, a 1984 Grammy Award and CMA honors as Male Vocalist of the Year in both 1983 and 1984. It would also lead to visits with Presidents, thanks in part to his patriotic anthem, God Bless the USA.

Over time Greenwood established a long career on the Nevada Casino Lounge circuit.  There were periods when he worked as a blackjack dealer by day and performed as a sax and piano player in the lounge at night.

He began touring on the strength of a string of Top Ten hits that ran from 1982 to 1988.  His first number one hit, Somebody’s Gonna Love You hit the top in 1983. God Bless the USA earned the CMA’s 1985 Song of the Year award.  The song was also used during the Presidential campaigns of both Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush.

In November 2008, President George W. Bush appointed lee to a six year term on the National Council Of The Arts.

He is married to former Miss Tennessee, Kimberly Payne.  They have two sons together.  He has four other children from a previous marriage.
