Sunday Morning Country Classic Spotlight To Feature Loretta Lynn

Join me Sunday, June 22^nd for the Sunday Morning Country Classic Spotlight as we feature Loretta Lynn at 11 a.m.  The Country Classic Show kicks off at 9 a.m.

Loretta Lynn is a chart topping country music singer and songwriter whose work has spanned more than 50 years.  During the 60’s and 70’s, she ruled the country charts, racking up more than 70 hits as a solo artist and duet partner.  Lynn paved the way for other women in country music.

One of Loretta's mentors was Patsy Cline, who taught her a lot about how to dress back in the day.  In 1977, Lynn recorded I Remember Patsy, an album dedicated to her friend and mentor.  The album covered some of Patsy’s biggest hits including She’s Got You and Why Can’t He Be You?,  both of which became major hits

Loretta enjoyed enormous success in country music until the early 1980’s.  She had her last number one hit in 1979 with Out of My Head and Back In My Bed.

She wrote and recorded the Coal Miner’s Daughter in 1970 and the song became a huge number one hit.  Lynn published her autobiography, The Coal Miner’s Daughter, in the mid 1970’s.  In 1980, the book was adapted for the movie screen, with Sissy Spacek as Loretta Lynn and Tommy Lee Jones as Mooney Lynn her husband.  The film received seven Academy Award nominations winning a Best Actress Oscar for Spacek, a Grammy nomination for Spacek’s singing as Lynn plus several Golden Globe Awards.

In 2004, Lynn made a comeback with the successful album Van Lear Rose.  She wrote or co-wrote every song.  On September 25, 2012 Lynn marked her 50^th Anniversary as a Grand Ole Opry member.

Loretta married Oliver Lynn, commonly known as Mooney, for running moonshine. Mooney died on August 22, 1966.  They were married almost fifty years.
