Taking Another Look At The Gun Control Issue

As the Gun Control Debate heats up in Washington, it seems the focus is still on banning certain styles of assault rifles and mandatory background checks for anyone buying a guy.  Of course a background check does nothing to prevent people from stealing or buying them illegally, but I generally don't have a problem with that.

What I do have a problem with is that we seem to focus on the gun itself and not on the person pulling the trigger.  There have been some discussions about mental health, video games and movies, but since the left and Hollywood are generally on the same side, there hasn't been any serious repercussions towards the movie industry or video games.  Ironically, I don't think there even should be, but it seems they aren't be held responsible at the same level as gun owners and enthusiasts.

If you think I'm exaggerating here's a graphic featuring 8 movies that are currently out and in or near the Top 10 at the Box Office.  In all these covers you will find a gun, except the Stallone film, "Bullet To The Head", which is pretty self-explanatory.

Now let me reiterate, I'm not saying we start putting ratings on everything and getting crazy about censorship, but at least could we admit to ourselves that all the gun play in these films could be damaging to an already corrupted mind.

Video games are equally as violent and potentially dangerous to someone who already is mentally unstable.  For some video games and movies are a stress-reliever and an momentary escape from reality.  So is skeet shooting and target practice with a real gun.  But for someone who need clinical help for a mental illness any of these things might not be the best outlet.

It's unfortunate this has become such a political issue.  The left has wanted gun bans forever and they are using the school shootings as their opportunity.  The Right wants their assault rifles (not exactly sure what for) and feels this is a slippery slope to more restrictions.  Background checks will hopefully help slow down the process, but ultimately we will need to look at WHY people are so violent and feel the need to kill in the first place.
