If it hasn't hit you yet, you are either really lucky, or your time is coming. I'm talking about this cold that is going around. It got me this weekend thanks to one person.

Around here when someone gets sick, it tends to make its way through the whole building unless we are really cautious. Now those of us on the air know that we need to stay as healthy as possible. Our voices are our lives. We lose it and we can't be on the air. Typically when someone in the office presents signs of being sick, we run away from them, grab our cans of Lysol and start spraying. This time, it snuck up on us like a thief in the night.

Early last week I was on my way to the restroom when one of our newer sales reps stopped me in the hallway. She asked a very good question, "What do the on air people do when they are sick? Do they have to still go on air or do you have someone fill in for them? Like, what if they lose their voice?"

Those are great questions and I thought, "Wow, she's really learning everything she can in the building!" I was impressed. I proceeded to tell her that we have to be on, so unless we absolutely can't talk, chances are, we will fight through it and keep broadcasting.

It was at this point that she said, "Oh ok, I was just thinking about that because I'm sick and have started losing my voice." She is literally standing 8 inches away from me. It was at that point that I told her to get away from me because I didn't want to be sick. I started taking Zicam immediately and doubled my vitamin C intake.

No amount of precaution could stop it. By Thursday morning I woke up with a sore throat, Friday morning I started getting sinus congestion and by Saturday morning it was all I could do to keep my nose from running. I had no choice but to work so I went to the drug store, picked up my DayQuil and started loading up on it. I have been doped up all weekend and feel like a walking zombie since Saturday morning.

I want to apologize to anyone that may have gotten this cold from me while I was out and about this weekend. I promise you, I washed my hands constantly, I was using hand sanitizer left and right, I wasn't wiping my nose and then shaking your hand and I tried as hard as possible to warn everyone that I was fighting a cold and not to get too close. So if you get it, please forgive me - I did everything I could to prevent it.

I can't just lay the blame on this sales rep. I probably would have gotten it eventually, but still. If you are sick, don't stop to talk to me. Send me an email, a text, a phone call, ANYTHING. Just don't talk to me face to face!
