This “Beauty Hack” Could Make You Sick
I’m all for saving money and I’m all for making things easier, but there are a few of these “life hacks” that could make you sick.
I just love the website Buzzfeed. They find some of the most creative lists, but recently, I came across one that could make you sick. The headline read 42 Money-Saving Tips Every Makeup Addict Needs To Know and they had me hook, line and sinker. So I clicked.
There were ideas for how to save the last of your lipstick, what to do with the last little bit of perfume, how to make your own mineral make up, but I stumbled on a couple of them that made me cringe and they involved mascara.
I am a fan of mascara. If I were going to a desert island and I could bring two beauty products with me, one of them would be mascara, but when mascara is dry and clumpy, the answer is not to put the tube in a little bit of hot water, nor is it to put saline solution into the tube and shake it up. The answer is to throw it away.
Mascara needs to be replaced every three months because you have mites and bacteria that live on your eyelashes. When you put mascara on your eyelashes, those mites and bacteria can transfer onto your mascara wand. Then they get into your mascara tube. Your mascara tube is a dark and moist environment and it’s a perfect breeding ground for staph bacteria and other little ishy things, so if you continue to use old dry mascara, even if you try and “save” it by putting it in hot water or mixing it with saline solution, you’re risking getting an infection in your eye and ain’t nobody got time for that.
I know makeup can be expensive, but some of the better drugstore brands that I like are elf, Max Factor, and L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Mascara. Many times, the high end brands sell travel or trial versions of their popular mascaras and ounce for ounce, they’re often a better buy, so please, stop trying to “save” your old mascara and start saving your eyes by buying a new tube.
