Next Sunday will mark 100 years since the Titanic disappeared into the Atlantic Ocean at 2:20 A.M. April 15th 1912. ‘Titanic’ first hit theaters in 1997, it was nominated for 14 Oscars and took home 11 of them. The epic movie grossed over $600 million at the domestic box office, and today (April 4) the film will be re-released to theaters, but this time you can see it in 3D. Here are some fun facts about the movie you probably didn’t know.

1. Director James Cameron was the one who insisted Leonardo DiCaprio play Jack Dawson, the studio wanted it to be Matthew McConaughey

2. Reba McEntire had accepted the role of Molly Brown, but turned it down later due to scheduling conflicts.

3. Rose was originally going to be played by Gwyneth Paltrow

4. There actually was a J. Dawson that died aboard the Titanic, but James Cameron didn’t know that until filming had wrapped.

5. The role of Captain Smith was offered to Robert De Niro but he couldn’t take it due to a gastrointestinal infection he was fighting at the time.

6. The body of water that was used as the ‘ocean’ that passengers were jumping into was only 3 feet deep.

7. ‘Titanic’ was the first film to be released to video while it was still in theaters

8. The most expensive suite on the ship cost $4,350 which is equivalent to about $75,000 today.

9. ‘Titanic’ was the first film directed by James Cameron that didn’t mention or show nuclear weapons.

The first showing at Marcus Parkwood Cinemas in Waite Park is 4:00 P.M. tonight. If you have never seen ‘Titanic’ in theaters, I highly suggest you do.
