What ever happened to spending time with family, overeating, doing dishes, watching football, playing games, and making leftover-turkey sandwiches? This year, more stores than ever are planning on being open for Christmas shopping…on Thanksgiving.

In addition to locally owned area stores, Macy's, Target, Toys-R-Us, JC Penny, Staples, Old Navy, GAP, Banana Republic, and more will be open on Thanksgiving -- to get in on the early rush for holiday shopping.

Roger Beahm, professor of marketing at Wake Forest University says, “The floodgates have opened, and people will turn Thanksgiving Day shopping into a tradition as they historically have on the day after Thanksgiving -- stores don’t want to be left behind."

Stores are also feeling the crunch to open early because the holiday shopping season is six days shorter this year than last.
