What Does Dad Want For Father’s Day?

Jen Jacobs

I always ask my Dad, “What do you want for Father’s Day?” His answer for years and years and years is always, “A nice card.” Usually I ignore him and get him something anyway. Here’s what Dad really wants.

According to a new survey, what Dad wants more than anything on Father’s Day is spending time with you.

That’s right. He wants to spend time with you. He wants to kick back, relax, maybe pop a top or two, grill some steaks and hang out.

So, while you’re toiling over which tie he wants, know this: Dad doesn’t want a tie.

The survey also says that Dad likes gift cards, so if your dad does need a tie, get him a gift card to his favorite store and let him pick out his own tie. My parents are retiring this year, so I think maybe I’ll just go with straight cash and tell him not to spend it on the house. (They’re getting their house ready to sell and fun Father’s Day money shouldn’t be used for something boring like that.)

One of my favorite memories of Father’s Day was the year I went to my mom and dad’s house and we all just hung out. I think I gave my dad a piece of race used sheet metal from Denny Hamlin, but I don’t really remember. What I do remember is that we grilled, ate, chilled on the deck and then watched a couple of episodes of Ice Road Truckers, and that was it.

So, Dad really just wants to hang out with you. If you are giving a gift, make it a useful one and don’t forget a card, but most importantly, don’t forget to go and see your dad.
