Why Did I Give Up Twitter For Lent?

Justin Sullivan/Getty Images News

This is my first time making a Lenten sacrifice and I gave up Twitter. Why?

As a newly minted Catholic, I was required to give something up for Lent. On Fat Tuesday, I was talking with my husband about what to give up. I said I couldn’t give up Facebook or the computer because I needed those things for work. He challenged me to give up Twitter and I accepted.

I really like Twitter. Some people think it’s dumb or don’t understand it, but I think it’s a really useful source for breaking news, world news, fun, and an unfiltered look at what’s happening around the globe. It took me a while to get on board with Twitter, but all in all, I’d say it’s a fun place to be. Facebook is more fun, but I do enjoy Twitter.

I remembered our priest saying that it has been a harsh winter, please do not be so harsh on yourselves with your Lenten penitence. It’s hard enough for me to go veggie on Fridays, and I thought that would be fine, but I have found that giving up Twitter too has really been difficult; especially when artists I love are announcing their concert tours and doing so via Twitter. There have also been global events like the Malaysian Flight 370 mystery and the Chilean earthquake that I normally would have hopped on Twitter to stay on top of, but since I gave up Twitter, I had to rely on Google and traditional media to get my information.

In the Roman Catholic faith, Lent technically ends on Maundy Thursday, but I was challenged to stay off until Easter morning, so that’s what I am going to do.
