Why Would I Get Married Again?
Glen and I are being formally received into the Catholic church this weekend and in the process we need to get married again so that our marriage is recognized by the church. That got me wondering, “Would I marry Glen again?”
Glen and I met about 11 years ago when we were both working at Metro Traffic Control in Minneapolis. We were always friends in addition to being coworkers.
When he lost his mother, I was there at the visitation to pay my respects. When I left Metro and ended up programming a radio station in southern Minnesota and he needed extra cash, I hired him on the spot to pick up some part time hours. When I lost my job at that same radio station, I called all of the part timers (including Glen) to thank them for their hard work and help over the years and Glen informed me of a job opening back at Metro and he recommended me for the position and we worked together again for two and a half more years. When Metro folded, we lost touch, but found each other again two years later on Facebook.
When he asked me out to lunch, I just assumed it was only that. Lunch. I never once ever had even a pang of attraction toward him. He was a nice guy with good stories, sure, but he was so much older than me and he had kids and a house and he lived an hour and a half away, so I just brushed it off as “I was having lunch with a friend” and nothing more.
That was a Tuesday. It was September 21, 2010 to be exact. We went to Hell Burger in Duluth. I had a California style turkey burger with jack cheese, no mayo and no onion with a side of sweet potato fries and a Diet Coke. I wore a white tank top under a brown sleeveless tunic with dark jeans, a jean jacket and red shoes. Can you see where I am going with this?
By Thanksgiving I had picked out my wedding dress, we were engaged before Christmas and got married in October of 2011. Many criticized us for “rushing into things” but when you know what you want for the rest of your life, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.
It hasn’t been all sunshine, lollipops and rainbows and there have been tests along the way and there are more to come. We know that, but we are best friends first and we’re also a team, so when we do things or face challenges, we face them together.
We are going through our convalidation ceremony on Saturday and I’m looking forward to marrying Glen this time just as much as I was the first time around.
