This commercial is from last year but it gave me chills when I first saw it.

The advertisement, which was put out by British company Sainsbury, is a reenactment of the Christmas Truce of 1914.  Basically, while these guys are fighting in the trenches of Europe during World War I and both sides agreed to call a truce for the Christmas holiday.

Garth Brook has a song called Belleau Wood on his Sevens album that is about this very same thing.  In fact the advertisement could be the video because they match up so perfectly.

I'm a little bit in awe when I hear that song and I watch this video because both sides had enough respect for the holiday and for each other that they agreed to stop fighting for 24 hours.  Sadly I don't see that happening today.

My great-grandfather on my maternal grandfather's side fought in Europe during the first World War and he was in the trenches.  I have even been told he fought in one of the places where both sides came together to sing Silent Night.  One has to wonder if it ever crossed the minds of the soldiers that night what it was they were fighting for in the first place.

I love the ad by Sainsbury!  It's beautifully made, pays tribute to something remarkable that happened in a dark time and I think it serves as an incredible reminder of what this season is all about.  It's not about the presents, it's about sharing with one another and coming together despite whatever differences we have.  It's nothing short of beautiful.
