Every Wednesday we take a trip down memory lane to highlight a classic country artist. This week we’re flashing back to 1980′s with Dan Seals.

Dan grew up in Texas, where he spent most of his time with his grandparents.  It was the stories his grandmother told him that inspired him to write many of his songs including Everything That Glitters is Not Gold.  His entire family was in the music business.  His parents were in a country band and both his brothers are recording artists as well.  In fact his older brother, Jim, is half of Seals and Croft.

His mother moved him to Dallas in his teens where he met a fellow musician named John Colley.  The two would later form the popular duo, England Dan and John Ford Coley.  Now, you may be wondering where he came up with England Dan — when he was a kid that was a nickname his brother gave him because he was enamored with the Beatles and even walked around using a British accent.

In 1982, the duo broke up and Dan headed to Nashville to pursue a solo career.  He really struggled.  It wasn’t until he released a song called God Must Be a Cowboy that people really started to take notice of him.  Soon after songs such as Bop and Meet Me In Montana topped the charts.

He continued making music and touring up until his death in 2009.  In his spare time, you could find him doing one his favorite things — fly fishing.

Check out this interview from 1990 — he discusses his success as half of the duo, England Dan and John Ford Coley, and his solo career.

The Country Classic Flashback is brought to you by Midwest Machinery on East Highway 23 in Sauk Rapids with eight other locations in Central Minnesota.
